Sept 26 Message Living in Days of Awe

The temple.jpg

In the Yom Kippur of old at this great temple of the Levite priests in Jerusalem and at the Essene temple in Carmel,  one high priest stood at one alter and beseeched the one true God/Goddess on behalf of his people.

The lesson learned is that the pure and righteous actions of one person done with correct intent, CAN make a difference.

Call to Worship

Let us begin our worship on this holy Sabbath with a traditional Hebrew Yom Kippur prayer. Listen, prepare your heart to be one with the One.

Opening Hymn

Consider your blessings today as we come to before Yahweh and Shekkinah this Holy Sabbath.

Opening Prayer

Our Father Our King, Our Mother Our Queen
Hear our prayer
We have failed to live in Thee
Have compassion upon us and upon our children
Help us bring an end to pestilence, war, and famine
Cause all hate and oppression to vanish from the earth
Inscribe us for blessing in the Book Of Life
Let the new year be a good year for us
Amen

Scripture Reading

1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'These are my appointed feasts, the
appointed feasts of the Lord, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies. 3 " 'There are six days when you
 may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work;
wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the Lord....
26 The LORD said to Moses, 27 "The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and present an offering made to the LORD by fire. 28 Do no work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the LORD your God. ...31 You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live. 32 It is a sabbath of rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath."
Leviticus 23:1-3, 26-28, 31-32

  Message

Today the Jewish world is preparing for the holiest day in the Jewish calender. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement,  begins Sunday at sunset. When this day ends, it will close the Jewish High Holy Days for the year 5770 on the Jewish Calender. These days began with Rosh Hashanah (Friday, Sept 18th) and will end on Monday, Sept 28th with Yom Kippur.  The ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are commonly known as the "Days of Awe" because they are days of great solemnity and reverence. As we read in the scripture above, these High Holy Days were set as an everlasting ordinance to be commemorated for all time.

Yom Kippur is probably the most important holiday of  the Jewish year. Many Jews who do not observe any Jewish custom will refrain from work, fast, and/or attend services on this day. Yom Kippur commemorates the day that God forgave the Jewish people for creating the Golden Calf idol.  As such it is set aside as an annual day to ask for forgiveness. It is a day set aside to atone for all wrongdoings, mistakes and errors of omission of the last year. It is the last chance to make things right.

According to Jewish custom, there is a Book of Life in which each soul's name is written. In this book, it is written who will live and who will die, who will have a good life and who will have a bad life for the next year. The writing is done by God on Rosh Hashanah. However, our actions, during the Days of Awe can alter the decree. The actions that change the decree are repentance, prayer, and good deeds or charity. The book is sealed on Yom Kippur. This concept of writing in the Book of Life is the source of the common greeting "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year".

It is important to understand the past in order to shape the future. You have to know where you have been and where you are now before you can know where you are going. That is why we have taken the time to explain the tradition behind the Jewish High Holy Days. That is also why scripture implores us to keep these feasts for all time. It is important to understand both historically and through observance, the past practices of our religion because that is the foundation upon which our future spirituality is built.

Our spiritual ancestors, the ancient Essenes, rejected many of the concepts of the mainstream Judaism of their day. Their goal was to filter out all impurities and distill their worship of God to its purest essence. They did not go to  the temple in Jerusalem because the priesthood had become corrupt. They did not sacrifice animals to atone for their sins. They even had their own solar calendar rather than the Jewish lunar calendar that is still in use today. Their intent was pure but in their zealousness for purity, they became increasingly isolated.

Father and Mother God saw the purity of their intent and sent Yeshua to help guide the Essenes to a better way. Yeshua showed His Essene brethren that they could be in the world but not of the world. He taught that that those who have eyes to see have  a responsibility to guide the blind... to bring the Kingdom of God to earth. He showed a better Way. It was a way of Love.  Today, during this annual time of introspection, we as modern Essenes should seek to refine who we are again. We need to get our our spiritual GPS and guide ourselves back to the Way.  Mother and Father God have given us the coordinates. They are found in the three core principles of the Days of Awe...forgiveness. prayer, charity. Forgiveness opens the heart to love. Prayer is way we giving that love to God. Charity or acts of kindness is the way we give that love to others.

In those three principles...Love in action... there is power. Remember the words of Yeshua. "If you have the faith of a mustard seed you can move mountains." You are a child of God. Your positive energy, your strength can make a difference. You hold the keys to the world's future. Your good deed, your primal cry from the depths of your soul, can penetrate the Gates of Heaven.

Moment of Meditation

In this time of contemplation, let us reflect on the core principles of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur

Closing Prayer

Blessed are You, Lord our God,
King and Queen of the universe
who have chosen us as Your children
and taught us Your holiness
through Your commandments
And You have given us in love
this Sabbath day for rest
and this Day of Atonement.
Time of Forgiveness, Prayer and Charity
This is a day to recall with joy
Your relationship with humankind
For You chose to create us in Your image.
and nurtured us in Your wisdom.
Your word is true and enduring forever
Blessed are You
Yahweh and Shekineh
King and Queen of creation
who are present in this Sabbath
and in us and in this Day of Atonement.

Closing Words:

Let us close this time in the same traditional format used in Hebrew Yom Kippur services with a few Essene modifications

First we say the Shema

Before we begin, please remember that it is written when we recite these verses we should consider our souls to be at one with the holiness of the Divine.

 Deuteronomy 6:4

 Next repeat the following blessings:

Blessed are the names of our Father, Yahweh, Lord, God, forever and ever

Blessed are the names of our Mother, Shekkinah, Sophia, Holy Spirit, forever and ever

Blessed is the Son, Yeshua, who showed us the Way, forever and ever

Amen

Now repeat seven times (the number of completion) these words that were spoken by Elijah, the Essene prophet, on Mount Carmel:
"The Lord is God"

And we close this service before Yom Kippur with the sound of the traditional trumpet, the shofar, that awakens our souls to be sons and daughters of God, and agents of change in this world

May You Be Sealed in the Book of Life for a Good and Sweet New Year!

AND NEXT YEAR MAY WE BE IN THE NEW JERUSALEM OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD ON EARTH!

Opening Prayer

Our Father and Mother in Heaven, on earth and within us,
on this Sabbath day and Day of Remembrance,
we understand that this is a day You set aside for rest and joy.

However, we, Your children,
sometimes have a difficult time letting go
of  the work and worries that surround
and often consume us.

The truth is we
desperately need the peace and shelter
which are only found when we rest in You.

Help us to lay down all our stress and worries,
and self-imposed responsibilities.
Let us remember the joy of trusting You again
and relax in Your peace today.
Amen

Scripture Reading

1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'These are my appointed feasts, the appointed feasts of the Lord, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies. 3 " 'There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the Lord....
23 The Lord said to Moses, 24 "Say to the Israelites: 'On the first day of the seventh month you are to have a day of rest, a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts. 25 Do no regular work, but present an offering made to the Lord by fire.' "

Leviticus 23:1-3, 24-25

13And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.

14But when Yeshua saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

15Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

16And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

Mark 10:13-16

1At that time the disciples came to Yeshua and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"

2He called a little child and had him stand among them. 3And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5"And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me

Matthew 18:1-5

25 At that time Yeshua answered and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. 26 Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11: 25-30

  Message

Today is a very special Sabbath. It is both the regular seventh day weekly sabbath and the sabbath (or holy day) of Rosh Hashanah. As we read in the scripture above, both days, the weekly sabbath and Rosh Hashanah,  were divinely appointed to be celebrated for all eternity. Rosh Hashanah is also known as the Jewish New Year. It occurs on the 7th month of the Hebrew calender but it is the beginning of the new year. Rosh Hashanah literally means "Head of the Year". Today is the first day of the year 5770 of the Hebrew calendar.  Happy New Year! The Jewish year begins on this day because it commemorates the day that God completed the work of this creation. In Genesis, after God created Man on the 6th day, creation was complete. That was the first Rosh Hashanah. In other words, you could call this day the birthday of human kind.

Rosh Hashanah is also known as the feast of trumpets. In ancient Judah, the Shofar, a trumpet-like instrument made out of a ram's horn, was blown in the temple on Rosh Hashanah. The shofar is still sounded in Jewish synagogues all over the world on this date.  This year Rosh Hashanah  falls on the sabbath...the day of rest. We have a two-fold mission this year. We are to celebrate a time of new beginnings and to rest from our work and worries.

After the difficult year this world has endured, new beginnings are welcome! It is very a attractive to leave behind all the troubles of last year.  I am sure all of us would be happy to shut the door on the financial troubles, the job losses,  the divisiveness of the political atmosphere in the US, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the  mortgage crisis and all the other worries and stress we have suffered through in this past year.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to get in the mood to celebrate after all the recent difficulties. It is also hard to turn our mind off and rest. I think we all are a little shell-shocked. We are collectively suffering from a world-wide case of post-traumatic stress syndrome. Actually, the trauma is not really over. Many are still jobless. Many are still in the midst of losing their homes. Everyone, if not hurting themselves, knows someone who is.

How do we celebrate new beginnings when it seems like everyone is still suffering from the same old troubles. How do we do we turn our minds off and rest when there seems to be SO much to worry about? Yeshua pointed us to the answer to this dilemma. He instructed us to look to children as our example.

Little children are able to truly enjoy life because they trust adults to take care of them. They do not worry because they do not feel responsible for their survival. They realize that is the adult's responsibility. They just obey follow their parents blindly and blissfully. They know the rules. If they do what they are told, hold Dad's hand and don't go out of the yard, all will be well. As long as they stay in Mom or Dad's sight and follow their parents, they know they will be OK. Because they have placed the responsibility for their well being in the hands of their parents,  they are able to fully immerse themselves in the joy of the moment.

We can find the same joy by trusting our Father and Mother to take care of us.  Life gets overwhelming only when we place all the responsibility for our well-being on our own shoulders.  God/Goddess never expected us to bear that burden. Just like little children, all we were meant to do is trust our Father to protect us and listen to the instruction of our Mother. Take God's hand. Let Him guide you. Just follow. It is OK. You don't have to know where you are going. Just trust and follow the rules. Stay close to your Mom and Dad  and you will be safe.

I was reminded the benefits of the child-like mindset just recently. I participated in a traditional Hopi Indian corn dance.  It was  part of a celebration we had at the Hopi Health Care Center. Some of the children of the staff danced with us.  The adults who were dancing worked hard trying to stay in step and remember all the movements. The children just danced and usually did better than the grown-ups. They were certainly more fun to watch!

After a couple dances, I realized that just listening and feeling the music worked better than trying so hard to follow the steps. I just had to relax and let my feet flow with the drum beat. The next day some of the other staff said they wished they had participated in the dances too but they were afraid to get out in front of so many people. Others said they didn't think they could find a costume or that they thought the practice for the dances would be too difficult. Most regretted not enjoying the dance

The moral of the story: Life is like a dance. To fully enjoy it you must fully participate. Don't let worry get in the way. Don't try to figure out the steps ahead of time. Your Father and Mother will beat the drum. You just flow with the music and the steps will come.  If you choose to stand on the sidelines you will regret it. So join in and enjoy the dance.

Hymn of  Celebration

On this day of new beginnings, dedicate yourself to participating in the dance of life.
Flow with music God is playing for you this year.
Let God move through you.

When God Moves

Closing Prayer

Blessed are You, Lord our God,
King and Queen of the universe
who have chosen us as Your children
and taught us Your holiness
through Your commandments

And You have given us in love
this Sabbath day for rest
and this Day of Remembrance
for celebration.
The day to remember with the sounding of the trumpet
the creation of the world
through Your word.

This is a day to recall with joy
Your relationship with humankind
For You chose to create us in Your image.
and nurtured us in Your wisdom.

Your word is true and enduring forever

Blessed are You
Yahweh and Shekineh
King and Queen of creation
who are present in this Sabbath
and in us and in this Day of Remembrance

Finally, Have a very Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year!

Here's a nice little video as we end our message this week.

Universal Health Care: An International Comparison

As the United States attempts to reform the health care system, the debate has become more and more contentious. It seems that everyone has different ideas on the changes that should be made. Many special interests in the medical and pharmaceutical field are fueling the debate with fear tactics. We hear ridiculous stories about "death panels" and rationing of care. The plain truth is that care is already being rationed. There are over 40 million Americans without health insurance. All of those Americans strictly ration their care simply because of economics. Many with insurance have their care rationed by insurance companies whose only interest is the "bottom line."

Maybe it is time for Americans to remember why we are trying to reform health care in the first place. This debate was initiated because the present system DOES NOT work. That is something that we can all agree upon. Even those privileged Americans with excellent health insurance recognize that they are a minority. No one thinks that our present patchwork system of care is ideal. In a survey of 10 industrialized countries, US citizens were least satisfied with their health care system.

There are plenty of reasons for dissatisfaction in the US health care system. The American system is the most expensive in the world. We pay more per capita for medical care than any other nation in the world and we get less! In 2008, the US spent just over 15% of the GDP on health care. The next highest country was Switzerland at 11.3%. With such a high percent spent on health care, one would expect a superior product. If we spend the most money, we should get the best care. That is not the case, however.

In fact, the health of our citizens is pretty awful compared to the rest of the world. One marker of the health of a nation is the infant mortality rate. The rate of death of newborns in the US is the second worse in the modern world. Only Latvia falls behind  the US in infant mortality. Another universal marker of the health of a nation is the life expectancy of its citizens. For the last 2 decades, the United States has been steadily slipping in this ranking. Twenty years ago, the US was number 11. Last year, in spite of steadily rising health care costs, the US had fallen to number 42 in life expectancy. We are now behind nations such as Guam and Jordan.

So if we all agree there is a problem with our health care, how do we find a solution? One way may be to look at the example of other nations. Other countries have somehow found a way to provide health care to all their citizens for less money than we now spend. Those countries also have better ratings than us in the key markers of the health of their people. Maybe we can learn something by studying how they came upon their solutions? Here is a good article comparing the health care solutions of other nations. I found it very objective and informative.

The search for an alternative to America's present health care system has become increasingly divisive. There is one fact that is irrefutable. The present system does not work. We have the most expensive health care system in the world. Our system is so expensive that medical debt is the principle cause of personal bankruptcy in the United States. For all the money that we spend to stay healthy, one would expect a superior product. If we spend the most money, we should get the best results. However, that is not the case. In fact, we have some pretty awful results! One marker of the state of health care in a country is the infant mortality rate. The US has the second highest death rate for newborns in the modern world. Only Latvia has a worse track record. Another marker of the life expectancy of a country is the life expectancy of its citizens. For decades, the United States has been slipping in these ratings. We are now behind 41 other countries. Twenty years ago we were number 11. The cost of health care has gone up every year in that 20 years. Now we are number 42 behind countries such as Guam and Jordan.

Granola Snacking

Hungry and don't want to eat junk food full of chemicals and trans-fats?? Here is a real snacking mix that is easy to make and you can keep on hand! I was hungry and didn't have much in the house today. We live about 75 miles from the nearest store so I cooked this up with the ingredients I had in the shelves. That is why there are some strange measurements. For instance, I only had a half cup of margarine so I added some canola oil. Then, I only had one cup of flour and the mixture looked a little moist so I added a half cup of soy flour. The results turned out pretty good, though so I thought I would share them with you. If you don't have exactly these ingredients I encourage you to improvise too! Turned out good for me

Total time that it took me to make this: 45 min

VIVIAN'S GRANOLA

SERVES 12 , 12 cups

  • 1/2 cup soft tub margarine (I used Smart Balance)
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1 cup maple syrup,  Real not the fake stuff
  • 1/2 cup warmwater
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup soy flour
  • 1/2 cup ground flax seed
  • 6 cups oatmeal
  • 2 cups walnuts
  • 2 cups coconut flakes
  • 2 cups raisins
  1. Mix the water and salt to dissolve the salt. Set aside.
  2. Take a big broiler pan and put it across 2 stove burners. Turn the burners on low.
  3. Add the margarine, water/salt mixture, oil and maple syrup to the broiler pan. Stir ingredients together until the margarine is melted.
  4. Add all the other ingredients except the raisins. Mix well until everything is moist.
  5. You have 2 choices in how you can cook this granola. You can take your broiler pan and put it directly in the oven and bake at 250 for about 2 hours stirring every 20 to 30 minutes or so. That is the slow way. Or if you are hungry and can't wait -- like I usually am -- spread the granola out onto 2 big cookie sheets and bake at 325 for about 30 minutes stirring every 10 minutes or so.
  6. After the granola has finished baking, turn off the oven, take the pans out and spread the raisins over the top of the still warm granola. Let set until cool then put in zip-lock bags or air-tight canisters.
  7. Stays fresh about a week but will probably be eaten before then!

Number Nine (Not the Beatles Version)

 Nine.jpg

I have been observing with interest all the recent hoopla regarding September 9, 2009. As I am sure you are aware, this date that came and past was unique because numerically it was the ninth day of the ninth month in the year 09 (otherwise known as 09/09/09) This set of 3 nines will not reoccur again until  3009. There will not be another set of repeating single digit dates for almost a century either (January 1, 2101 or 01/01/01)

Everyone seems to have their own opinion as to the significance of this numerical anomaly. The opinions range all over the map. The Chinese consider 9 to be an auspicious number. The Japanese consider it bad luck. Modern numerologist associate the number nine with forgiveness, compassion and success and believe the date heralds a time of significant change in attitude of humanity. Some Bible scholars have hypothesized that 999 is merely 666 upside down and foretells a time of evil. One unstable person felt so strongly about this theory that he hijacked a plane in Mexico to bring attention to the date. I don't understand the logic of that action but I doubt this hijacker was thinking very logically!

It may be a little late to add my own thoughts about 09/09/09. I am behind the power curve, I know. It took me a while to ponder over the possible spiritual significance of this date. I know that God/Goddess uses numbers to assign significance to certain times or events. A time of completion, for instance, is often signified by the number 40 (such as 40 days and nights of rain or the children of Israel wandering in the wilderness for 40 years). Most cultures have a form of numerology. The ancient Essenes were no exception. The Hebrews had a very elaborate form of numerology. God can and does speak to mankind through this symbolism. So I felt there was a good possibility that our Father and Mother  were trying to send us a spiritual message in the triple 9 date.

I read all the internet musings and dismissed most of them.  I especially found the upside down 666 theory absurd. If God wanted to send a message of impending evil, it makes a lot more sense to do so on June 6th, 2006 (06/06/06). Then I decided to research Hebrew numerology to find out the significance of the number nine. I discovered Hebrew numerology assigned a number to every letter in their alphabet. This numeration system meant that every word had a numerical value as well. Certain qualities were assigned to every number. The number 6 was associated with unrest and trouble. When a number is repeated 3 times it is assigned an eternal quality. So the number 666 would signify eternal unrest. No wonder this number was given to represent the Antichrist in the Book of Revelations.

Nine, on the other hand, has a totally different connotation. Nine has no evil or negative meaning. The number nine was revered by the ancient Hebrews. It was considered so special that it was excluded from traditional Hebrew numerology. Hebrew numerology assigns letters of the alphabet to numbers 1 through 8. Nine is left alone. It is considered sacred and mystical and, therefore, is not used.

So, according to Hebrew numerology, the date 09/09/09 would be considered very sacred and mystical. The number is repeated three times. Repeating assigns an eternal quality. Also, the number 3 represents power. Sounds to me like Sept. 9 is heralding  the start of something good!  I, personally, hope it is the beginning of a time of new awareness....a time in which we, the children of God begin to bring about the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. That does not mean everything is going to be just fine and dandy from now on. The road ahead will continue to be difficult. The birth of a new world, like the birth of a child, requires labor pains. We must prepare but we must not despair. If we persevere and if we continue to seek the sacred and follow the path of light, we WILL see Heaven on Earth.

"Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God" Matthew 5:8

Sept 12 Message - Wealth and the Value of Money

s_five_dollars.jpg

"He who is of the opinion that money can do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money" - Benjamin Franklin

"Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless." - Ecclesiastes 5:10

In this era of financial crisis, many are taking a new look at their relationship with material wealth and discovering a healthier perspective between needs and wants.

Call to Worship

 Deuteronomy 6:4

Opening Hymn

Click below. Listen to the music, read the lyrics, sing along and enjoy.

Opening Prayer

Our Father and Mother in heaven
and on earth and within us,
we come before You this sabbath day
seeking to learn about the riches of Your Kingdom.
We recognize that Your values are different from the world's values.
We also recognize that
as Your children who called by Your name
Your values should be ours as well.
Guide us to a closer understanding of those values today.
Amen

Scripture Reading

19"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

24"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

Matthew 6:  19-24

22Then Yeshua said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 26Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

27"Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! 29And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

32"Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Luke 12: 22-34

Message

Yesterday the United States commemorated the anniversary of September 11th 2001. Most of us who were adults on 9/11/2001 can remember exactly what we were doing on that day eight years ago. Those moments and our reaction to them are preserved intact in our memories. If we bring those memories out again from the recesses of our minds, they are just as fresh as they were on that day. I can remember my own initial horror and then worrying for my children. I was concerned about how the graphic television coverage would effect them. I can recall precisely every detail of the look on my son's face as he turned from the TV and said, " Mom, the world is never going to be the same again, is it?" As I think of that moment, I feel the same hallow feeling in my stomach that I had that day, trying to think of some way to reassure him.

On that day, we were reminded of the one of the innate core values of humanity...the sacredness of life. All major religions recognize living beings as a manifestation or creation of the Divine Presence. Therefore, life...our sense of being...our presence in this universe...is a gift from above. That is why Sept 11 was so shocking. That is why those moments are etched so deeply into our psyche. We watched helplessly in horror as thousands of human lives were ended needlessly.

Sept 11, 2001 was not the first example in history where many lives were sacrificed without cause. Some, such as the holocaust of World War ll, were tragedies of much greater proportions. There have also been many other instances of misguided disregard for life in the name of God. The Spanish inquisition, the crusades and the "witch hunts" of Salem are just a few examples that come to my mind. The destruction of the World Trade Center was only unique because this was the first time such an event was televised live.

Edmund Burke, a famous British philosopher, stated that "Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it". Our Mother and Father created this world as a cosmic school for souls. The task of each individual and humanity as a whole is to learn and grow from mistakes. So what  are the lessons of 9/11 and all the other past mass slaughters? Well, the primary lesson is to have proper values and motives. James 4 states that fights and quarrels among men are the results of wrong desires and motives. Wars and mass murder occur when misguided individuals place a greater value on their ideology or power, or money than on human lives. As we read in the scriptures above, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

So how do we cultivate the correct values in our society? Yeshua stated that the first and most important law was to love the Lord with all of our heart and mind and soul, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. So, according to Yeshua, our highest priority is to love God/Goddess and each other. This is where we should place our highest value. In all we do, in all we say, value God and others as much as we value ourselves.

One of the results of tragedy is it causes us to reassess our values. When a house is on fire the first instinct is to get what you treasure and run. We hold close to us what is truly important. Here is a question for you. On September 11th, 2001 did you think about your bank account or your new car or your wardrobe? Probably not. My first thought was for my children. Then, when I heard about the plane that crashed into the Pentagon, I immediately thought of my brother who worked in the Pentagon at that time. Then, like many Americans, I thought, " What can I do to help?" People are what became important...not money, not things.

September 11th provides an interesting contrast to our most recent national crisis. This past year we have experienced a different type of loss. This crisis was all about money and physical possessions. Many people lost houses or jobs. In the midst of all the loss, many of us learned a valuable lesson. The things we acquired were really not that important.

There is an old saying...money can't buy happiness. That is only partially true. Money CAN buy a certain basic form of happiness. It is hard to be happy when starving or cold. But after the certain basic survival needs are met, more money does not make a person more happy. In fact, sometimes after that point there is an inverse relationship. More money equals more possessions which then creates more obligation and more stress in order to maintain the things.

During the past year, I was living in California which was the epicenter of the mortgage crisis. Before I left California, the unemployment rate had risen to about 11 percent. I had the privilege of providing medical care to many recently unemployed individuals. Many of my patients lost their houses to foreclosure. Some were scrambling to sell cars and other possessions to make ends meet. Just about everyone of my patients were at a point in their lives where they were reevaluating what was important and what was expendable in their lives. It was often painful to watch the stages of grieving and loss. But often it was inspiring as well. As my patients lost things and realized the things weren't that important, they grew and became stronger.  Some felt freed after the huge mortgage payment was gone. Some learned how much they valued their families or spouses. All who were able to let go were transformed.

The economists say that the American public is not spending like we were before this crisis. Some are worried that we will never spend like we did before. I hope we don't. I hope we have learned the lesson. I hope we have learned that things...possessions... are not the basis of our wealth and security. I hope that we have learned that we should be placing less value on money and the pursuit of money and more value on caring for each other. "Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God and all these things....all the things you need...all the things necessary for happiness and life and fulfillment... will be added unto you.

Listen to the music and prepare your heart to seek the Kingdom of heaven on earth.

Place your values in perspective now. Let go of what you believe you need and allow Father and Mother God to renew in you the eternal values and priorities that were placed within you at your creation.

Father and Mother let us do Your will

Amen

 I surrender

Sept 5 Message - Voice in the Wilderness Saying it is Good to Be Back

Desert Monsoon.JPG

The Hopi Reservation is an island in the desert - a world of its own surrounded by the Navajo nation.

The harsh desert mesas and the deep sense of isolation make one realize how dependent man is on the blessing of  Father Yahweh and Holy Spirit Mother.

So though the picture above looks a bit ominous, it is really quite a beautiful sight here on Hopi.

When rain clouds appear and the drops start to fall, everyone shares a deep heart felt joy.

It is good to be reminded in this way of what is real and essential in life.

A Note From Vivian

Aloha to All My Essene Brothers and Sisters and to All Friends and Family,

I just wanted to take  moment to say how nice it is to be back on the internet sharing my spiritual journey with you. I also want to collectively thank everyone who wrote out of concern when Ho’omana Ministries went silent a couple of weeks ago. I am so sorry for causing unnecessary worry. During the time we were not on the "net", we finalized our move to far northeast Arizona. We are now settled on the Hopi Indian reservation.   We really never intended for there to an interruption in the Sabbath messages during this time. However, it took us a little longer than expected to get internet service back. We had to wait to get service set up in the house and there is no Starbucks hotspot  for miles!! Until very recently, the only internet we have had available was via spotty cell phone reception on my Blackberry Bold. I am sure there is a way to maintain a blog via Blackberry but I am not proficient in the technique yet! So I took an unexpected vacation from the ministry.

Father God / Mother Goddess knew what was best for me, however.  I think it probably would have been difficult to maintain my sanity, keep up the Sabbath messages  AND orchestrating this move. It is a shame that moving locations had to be such a burden. But this was not an ordinary move either. There was so much to consider. At one time, it was pretty simple to travel as an Essene. Back in the first century, Essenes took only a staff, one pair of shoes, and a robe for their journeys. Every where they went, they would find another Essene community that would supply their needs as they passed through the area. It sure would be nice if that system was still in place today. But since we know no other Essene brethren in the area, and since this particular move was to one of the most remote areas in the US, we tried to be think carefully and bring everything we would possibly need with us.

Now, the transition process is almost complete. We still have a few boxes to unpack. Overall, though, we are settled in our adobe desert home. We even have the luxury of high-speed internet service via satellite. Now that we have some time to reflect, we are considering just exactly what this journey meant to us and our ministry. Why did Father and Mother bring us here and what is the next step?

I can not say that I have the answers to those questions yet. I think I am just beginning to get an inkling...a small insight...to the purpose of living remote. I believe that one reason we were called here, is the same reason many Essenes of Yeshua's day went to the wilderness. The Essenes of Qumran and the Therapuetae of Egypt sought out the desert to get away from the contaminating influences of civilization. They wanted to live a more pure life.

I have to admit that there is a simplicity....a purity....to this desert world. It brings you back to what real existence is all about. Subsisting here is not easy even in this modern age.  It requires a certain amount of self-reliance. We have had the electricity go out on us 4 times in our 2 weeks here. So now we are considering buying a generator. But we still need to figure out how to maintain enough fuel for the generator. I believe the ultimate answer will be solar panels. Then we will just need to rely on Father/Mother to maintain the abundant sunshine. Water is another matter. The water here is so alkaline that much of it is not drinkable. Many with money bring in bottled water. We invested in a water distiller which is more economical in the long run. But first you need to have water!

The Hopis have had a very dry year. Many Hopi are subsistence farmers. The Hopi are the best dry farmers in the world. Still there are plots of corn all around that are dry and withered with no tassles...no ears. We had rain this week. That is when I took the picture above. Everyone was in bittersweet rejoicing. It was too late for the corn but the rain was still so welcome on the barren land. It will help refill the aquifers that supply the reservation.

The summer monsoon thunderstorms are majestic and beautiful. I find that my living room window or the view from the porch is great entertainment....better than any TV show. It is so amazing to me that the same rocks can look different every day depending on how the sun is shining. And each small wonder of nature that I observe, brings be back to the wonder and greatness of my Father and Mother.  I understand why the Essene believe working in their gardens is a form of worship. That is the lesson of living in the wilderness. Cities are monuments to man. The wilderness..creation in general....is a testament to God/Goddess.

That is what I have learned so far...and  as I learn of my Father and Mother I also learn more of myself...who I am. This centering of myself is probably another reason why we are hear. To know where you are going , you must first find out where you are.

So that is a summary of my thoughts so far and I really have nothing else to share today. For the rest of the Sabbath worship time, I thought I would bring  you a few of my favorite worship moments from youtube. Enjoy!
