torah.jpg
 This lesson is  the first in a series of introductory Essene studies.
 This foundation series will provide background history and an understanding of the fundamentals of our worship to those who are new to the Essene Way.

This study time will replace our Sabbath message today.
Our church leader, Rev. Vivian, is on vacation with her family.

Scripture Reading

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.  5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gate"
Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Lesson

The Jews, long before the time of Jesus, were divided into three main sects, the Sadducees, the Pharisees, and the Essenes. The Sadducees included mainly the priestly and aristocratic families. The Pharisees constituted the scribes and sages that adhered to strict interpretation of the Torah. The Essenes were a separatist group, part of which formed an ascetic monastic community that retreated to the wilderness.

Why are the gospels silent about the Essenes, though they introduce us to the Pharisees, the Sadducees and even the Herodians- not a major sect? Jesus is recorded to have frequently rebuked and denounced both the Sadducees and Pharisees, but it is not related that he once mentioned the Essenes by name. Could it be that the people at the center of the story were the Essenes? This theory seems intuitively correct. Why would the writers have to explain or expound upon the Essene sect if they, themselves were Essenes? It would be more natural to mention the encounters  that their group, the Essenes, had with the other sects with whom they were at odds.

Neither Paul nor any of the other writers of epistles in the New Testament mentions the Essenes. It is as if they did not existed, even though we know they did. Three noted writers from the first century AD, Pliny, Josephus and Philo, provide us with descripitions of the Essenes. Pliny was a Roman naturalist who described the Essenes in his writings on natural history circa 70 AD. Josephus was a Roman historian who was also of Jewish ancestry. In his two famous books, The Jewish War, and Antiquities of the Jews,  Josephus, describes the Essenes in some detail. Philo was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 20 BC, died about 60 AD and was probably an Essenian Jew himself.

Philo provided a very admiring and detailed account of Essene Life.  We are informed by both Philo and Josephus that at the period in which John the Baptist and Jesus were born the Essenes were scattered all over Palestine, and that they numbered about four thousand souls. They speak with great respect and reverence of this sect, as surpassing all others in virtue. Josephus informs us that they led the same kind of life as the Pythagoreans in Greece, and that by their excellent virtue they were thought worthy even of divine revelations. Philo says they were honoured with the appellation of Essenes because of their exceeding holiness.

Philo speculated that the name "Essenes" was derived from the Greek word, "hosios", meaning holy. It has also been speculated by others that the name originated from the Hebrew word, "hasidim", which is translated as "pious ones". The name was not a self-appellation. It was how the group was perceived by outsiders. The Essenes were generally thought of as holy, pure and righteous people by their contemporaries.

The Essene Jews referred to themselves as Judah in their writings preserved in the dead sea scrolls. They thought of themselves as the true nation of Judah. They felt that the other two sects had corrupted the holy teachings. The Essenes refused to participate in the sacrifices at the temple in Jerusalem. Instead they separated themselves to follow as closely as possible the true Way ordained by Yahweh.

Their cardinal principles were active benevolence and self-discipline. They had an esoteric school guarded by secrecy, accessible through novitiate and degrees. Josephus, describing the rule of a community, presents the picture of a tranquil life, divided between practical avocations, assemblies, and ritual observances.

The Essenes traced their origin to Enoch, the good man who walked with God. One of the major Essene writings preserved in the Dead Sea scrolls is titled, "The Book of Enoch". They claim Melchizedek, an archetype of Yeshua (Jesus Christ) as the first high priest of the Essene order. Melchizedek was the priest to whom Abraham gave tithes. Some believe that Melchizedek was an actual manifestation of Yeshua. Thus Yeshua began the Essene movement, as well as facilitating the start of the Jewish religion through Abraham.

The history of the Essene brotherhood can be traced by looking at the development of the Jewish religion. It begins at the time of Melchizedek and the establishment of the Order of Melchizedek. It combines with Abraham when he pays homage to Melchizedek. It continues through Jacob (the story of Jacob’s ladder and of his wrestling with the angel). The Essene legacy is preserved through Joseph, another representation of Yeshua - saviour of his family. Then the Essene revelation returns through the great spiritual leader,Moses, who led the Jewish people out of bondage in Egypt. God spoke to Moses in the burning bush at Mount Sinai, which was a direct revelation of the Godhead.

Moses was given the Ten Commandments--which are very similar to the teachings that Melchizedek (Yeshua) gave to Abraham. Upon Moses’ death when he ascended, Joshua, another archetype of Yeshua, took over and led the Jewish people into the Promised Land.

The Essene, Jewish, Melchizedek, and Christian lineages are, in truth, one lineage, which sets the stage for spiritual teachings for humankind. Moses brought forth the law. Yeshua carried forth the law of Moses and added the love principle. Yeshua was the Messiah the Jewish people were waiting for, but it was only the Essenes who recognized that.

Yeshua was born into an Essene family and the Essenes were the first followers of Yeshua. They were the disciples. They were the ones gathered in the upper room in Acts. They were the early church. A future lesson will discuss all the similarities between Essene and early church beliefs. Here are just a few to help clarify why we know that the Essenes and the early church are one and the same. The Essenes believed in Baptism. They believed in tithing.  They were opposed to taking oathes. They simply said "yes" or "no". The Essenes taught that the physical body was the temple of the soul. Their doctrine was that their physical bodies were corruptible, but their souls were immortal.

The Essenes were and are the true church. All those who follow the Way today...no matter what they call themselves... they are really Essenes.  If you love the Lord with all your heart, mind and soul and love your neighbor as yourself and if you want to follow the Way Yeshua taught, you are an Essene. Why not accept and acknowledge your heritage now. Come home. The Father and Mother are waiting for you.

Quotes from the First Century Authors Regard Essenes

Josephus, "The Jewish War" Book 2,  Chapter 8

119 For three forms of philosophy are pursued among the Judeans: the members of one are Pharisees, of another Sadducees, and the third [school], who certainly are reputed to cultivate seriousness, are called Essenes; although Judeans by ancestry, they are even more mutually affectionate than the others. 120 Whereas these men shun the pleasures as vice, they consider self-control and not succumbing to the passions virtue.

122 Since [they are] despisers of wealth—their communal stock is astonishing—, one cannot find a person among them who has more in terms of possessions. For by a law, those coming into the school must yield up their funds to the order, with the result that in all [their ranks] neither the humiliation of poverty nor the superiority of wealth is detectable, but the assets of each one have been mixed in together, as if they were brothers, to create one fund for all.

No one city is theirs, but they settle amply in each. And for those school-members who arrive from elsewhere, all that the community has is laid out for them in the same way as if they were their own things, and they go in and stay with those they have never even seen before as if they were the most intimate friends. For this reason they make trips without carrying any baggage at all—though armed on account of the bandits. In each city a steward of the order appointed specially for the visitors is designated quartermaster for clothing and the other amenities. Dress and also deportment of body: like children being educated with fear. They replace neither clothes nor footwear until the old set is ripped all over or worn through with age. Among themselves, they neither shop for nor sell anything; but each one, after giving the things that he has to the one in need, takes in exchange anything useful that the other has. And even without this reciprocal giving, the transfer to them [of goods] from whomever they wish is unimpeded Toward the Deity, at least: pious observances uniquely [expressed]. Before the sun rises, they utter nothing of the mundane things, but only certain ancestral prayers to him, as if begging him to come up. After these things, they are dismissed by the curators to the various crafts that they have each come to know, and after they have worked strenuously until the fifth hour they are again assembled in one area, where they belt on linen covers and wash their bodies in frigid water. After this purification they gather in a private hall, into which none of those who hold different views may enter: now pure themselves, they approach the dining room as if it were some [kind of] sanctuary. After they have seated themselves in silence, the baker serves the loaves in order, whereas the cook serves each person one dish of one food. The priest offers a prayer before the food, and it is forbidden to taste anything before the prayer; when he has had his breakfast he offers another concluding prayer. While starting and also while finishing, then, they honor God as the sponsor of life. At that, laying aside their clothes as if they were holy, they apply themselves to their labors again until evening. They dine in a similar way: when they have returned, they sit down with the vistors, if any happen to be present with them, and neither yelling nor disorder pollutes the house at any time, but they yield conversation to one another in order. And to those from outside, the silence of those inside appears as a kind of shiver-inducing mystery. The reason for this is their continuous sobriety and the rationing of food and drink among them—to the point of fullness. As for other areas: although there is nothing that they do without the curators’ having ordered it, these two things are matters of personal prerogative among them: [rendering] assistance and mercy. For helping those who are worthy, whenever they might need it, and also extending food to those who are in want are indeed left up to the individual; but in the case of the relatives, such distribution is not allowed to be done without [permission from] the managers. Of anger, just controllers; as for temper, able to contain it; of fidelity, masters; of peace, servants. And whereas everything spoken by them is more forceful than an oath, swearing itself they avoid, considering it worse than the false oath; for they declare to be already degraded one who is unworthy of belief without God. They are extraordinarily keen about the compositions of the ancients, selecting especially those [oriented] toward the benefit of soul and body. On the basis of these and for the treatment of diseases, roots, apotropaic materials, and the special properties of stones are investigated. To those who are eager for their school, the entry-way is not a direct one, but they prescribe a regimen for the person who remains outside for a year, giving him a little hatchet as well as the aforementioned waist-covering and white clothing. Whenever he should give proof of his self-control during this period, he approaches nearer to the regimen and indeed shares in the purer waters for purification, though he is not yet received into the functions of communal life. For after this demonstration of endurance, the character is tested for two further years, and after he has thus been shown worthy he is reckoned into the group. Before he may touch the communal food, however, he swears dreadful oaths to them: first, that he will observe piety toward the deity; then, that he will maintain just actions toward humanity; that he will harm no one, whether by his own deliberation or under order; that he will hate the unjust and contend together with the just; that he will always maintain faithfulness to all, especially to those in control, for without God it does not fall to anyone to hold office, and that, should he hold office, he will never abuse his authority—outshining his subordinates, whether by dress or by some form of extravagant appearance; always to love the truth and expose the liars; that he will keep his hands pure from theft and his soul from unholy gain; that he will neither conceal anything from the school-members nor disclose anything of theirs to others, even if one should apply force to the point of death. In addition to these, he swears that he will impart the precepts to no one otherwise than as he received them, that he will keep away from banditry, and that he will preserve intact their school’s books and the names of the angels. With such oaths as these they completely secure those who join them. Those they have convicted of sufficiently serious errors they expel from the order. And the one who has been reckoned out often perishes by a most pitiable fate. For, constrained by the oaths and customs, he is unable to partake of food from others. Eating grass and in hunger, his body wastes away and perishes. That is why they have actually shown mercy and taken back many in their final gasps, regarding as sufficient for their errors this ordeal to the point of death.

146 They make it point of honor to submit to the elders and to a majority. So if ten were seated together, one person would not speak if the nine were unwilling

152 The war against the Romans proved their souls in every way: during it, while being twisted and also bent, burned and also broken, and passing through all the torture-chamber instruments, with the aim that they might insult the lawgiver or eat something not customary, they did not put up with suffering either one: not once gratifying those who were tormenting [them], or crying. 153 But smiling in their agonies and making fun of those who were inflicting the tortures, they would cheerfully dismiss their souls, [knowing] that they would get them back again. For the view has become tenaciously held among them that whereas our bodies are perishable and their matter impermanent, our souls endure forever, deathless: they get entangled, having emanated from the most refined ether, as if drawn down by a certain charm into the prisons that are bodies. 155 But when they are released from the restraints of the flesh, as if freed from a long period of slavery, then they rejoice and are carried upwards in suspension. For the good, on the one hand, sharing the view of the sons of Greece they portray the lifestyle reserved beyond Oceanus and a place burdened by neither rain nor snow nor heat, but which a continually blowing mild west wind from Oceanus refreshes.

159 There are also among them those who profess to foretell what is to come, being thoroughly trained in holy books, various purifications, and concise sayings of prophets. Rarely if ever do they fail in their predictions.

160 There is also a different order of Essenes. Though agreeing with the others about regimen and customs and legal matters, it has separated in its opinion about marriage. For they hold that those who do not marry cut off the greatest part of life, the succession, and more: if all were to think the same way, the line would very quickly die out. 161 To be sure, testing the brides in a three-year interval, once they have been purified three times as a test of their being able to bear children, they take them in this manner; but they do not continue having intercourse with those who are pregnant, demonstrating that the need for marrying is not because of pleasure, but for children. Baths [are taken] by the women wrapping clothes around themselves, just as by the men in a waist-covering. Such are the customs of this order

Philo (Aprox 20 AD):

"They do not offer animal sacrifice, judging it more fitting to render their minds truly holy. They flee the cities and live in villages where clean air and clean social life abound. They either work in the fields or in crafts that countribute to peace. They do not hoard silver and gold and do not acquire great landholdings; procuring for themselves only what is necessary for life. Thus they live without goods and without property, not by missfortune, but out of preference. They do not make armaments of any kind. They do not keep slaves and detest slavery. They avoid wholesale and retail commerce, believing that such activity excites one to cupidity. With respect to philosophy, they dismiss logic but have an extremely high regard for virtue. They honor the Sabbath with great respect over the other days of the week. They have an internal rule which all learn, together with rules on piety, holiness, justice and the knowledge of good and bad. These they make use of in the form of triple definitions, rules regarding the love of God, the love of virtue, and the love of men. They believe God causes all good but cannot be the cause of any evil. They honor virtue by foregoing all riches, glory and pleasure. Further, they are convinced they must be modest, quiet, obedient to the rule, simple, frugal and without mirth. Their life style is communal. They have a common purse. Their salaries they deposit before them all, in the midst of them, to be put to the common employment of those who wish to make use of it. They do not neglect the sick on the pretext that they can produce nothing. With the common purse there is plenty from which to treat all illnesses. They lavish great respect on the elderly. With them they are very generous and surround them with a thousand attentions. They practice virtue like a gymnastic exercise, seeing the accomplishment of praiseworthy deeds as the means by which a man ensures absolute freedom for himself."

"The Essenes live in a number of towns in Judea, and also in many villages and in large groups. They do not enlist by race, but by volunteers who have a zeal for righteousness and an ardent love of men. For this reason there are no young children among the Essenes. Not even adolescents or young men. Instead they are men of old or ripe years who have learned how to control their bodily passions. They possess nothing of their own, not house, field, slave nor flocks, nor anything which feeds and procures wealth. They live together in brotherhoods, and eat in common together. Everything they do is for the common good of the group. They work at many different jobs and attack their work with amazing zeal and dedication, working from before sunrise to almost sunset without complaint, but in obvious exhilaration. Their exercise is their work. Indeed, they believe their own training to be more agreeable to body and soul, and more lasting, than athletic games, since their exercises remain fitted to their age, even when the body no longer possesses its full strength. They are farmers and shepherds and beekeepers and craftsmen in diverse trades. They share the same way of life, the same table, even the same tastes; all of them loving frugality and hating luxury as a plague for both body and soul. Not only do they share a common table, but common clothes as well. What belongs to one belongs to all. Available to all of them are thick coats for winter and inexpensive light tunics for summer

Pliny the Elder in his famous writing "Natural History":

"To the west (of the Dead Sea) the Essenes have put the necessary distance between themselves and the insalubrious shore. They are a people unique of its kind and admirable beyond all others in the whole world; without women and renouncing love entirely, without money and having for company only palm trees. Owing to the throng of newcomers, this people is daily reborn in equal number; indeed, those whom, wearied by the fluctuations of fortune, life leads to adopt their customs, stream in in great numbers. Thus, unbeleivable though this may seem, for thousands of centuries a people has existed which is eternal yet into which no one is born: so fruitful for them is the repentance which others feel for their past lives!"

Opening Hymn

The Gift is in you and in me. The gift is life. The precious gift of life from the Father and Mother of all is given to us through God's emissaries on earth - our human fathers and mothers. When God allowed our parents to pass on the Gift of life, they were also given the sacred responsibility protect and tend that new life. God intended all of us to be nurtured at our mother's breast and kept safe in our father's arms.

Scripture Reading

 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Deuteronomy 6:4-7

1Jesus continued: "There was a man who had two sons. 12The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them.

 13"Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

 17"When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' 20So he got up and went to his father.
      "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

 Luke 15:11-20

  17Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.
James 1:17-18

  Message

Father’s Day presents us with an opportunity to look at the essential role of fathers in our lives. Fathers are part of God's plan for the human family. God chose to bring life into this world through male and female conduits...fathers and mothers. When a new baby is born into this world, the parents mirror the creative process of God. The masculine and feminine combine and instill a part of each into a new form. Each new birth provides us with an intimate glimpse of the mystery of creation. In an ideal world, God's divine plan would continue after the birth "on earth as it is in heaven." Each child would be born into a loving family.  Each child would be raised with human parents who mirror all the attributes of the Heavenly Parents. Then through the examples of their human parents, children would have an innate understanding of our sweet Holy Spirit Mother and our kind generous Heavenly Father in Heaven.

Unfortunately, we do not live in an ideal world. Even for well-intentioned parents, it is an impossible task to be a perfect role model. Firstly, even though we are God's children, the Divine Spirit within us is encased in an earthly vessel. In other words, we are human! Secondly we do not live in a society that is conducive to good parenting. It is fast paced, hectic and full of stress. Often, both parents have to work (sometimes two jobs) just to meet the physical needs of the family. Modern society is  even less conducive to good fathering. Fathers as a whole have not steered child-rearing in our culture. The mothers are in the driver's seat and the fathers are relegated the back seat. Only 2 or 3 children out of a hundred, when teenagers, spent more quality time with their fathers than with their mothers. We are a generation of under-fathered children.

Fathers are no longer considered the hub of the family wheel. It is as if having a father present in the household is a nice accessory but not essential. He provides extra financial stability and hangs around in the background doing ancillary functions. To quote from the columnist. Erma Bombeck, "What do fathers do? As far as I could observe, they brought around the car when it rained so everyone else could stay dry. They always took the family pictures, which is why they were never in them. They carved turkeys on Thanksgiving, kept the car gassed up, weren't afraid to go into the basement, mowed the lawn, and tightened the clothesline to keep it from sagging."

Some fathers have internalized this belief that they are not that important in the lives of their kids.  We have more absentee Dads than ever before. Statistics state that 28% of children today grow up in fatherless homes.  Some Dads are present but not emotionally available. Many men have no role models of loving fathers so they have no understanding of how to relate to their children. Children grow up living with their fathers but never really knowing them.

Some fathers have tried to take on a more central role in the family. However, their efforts are misguided. In trying to help the household run more smoothly, some Dads think they have to do more things...help with dishes or cook dinner or do laundry. The real need is for fathers to play a central role in family relationships...not just perform tasks. Yes, life is busy and tasks have to be done. The key is to not sacrifice the important on the alter of the urgent. The pile of dirty dishes in the sink may be screaming to be washed but that is not really important. Five minutes spent really listening to a child's story about school, singing a lullaby to a baby, or taking the time to correctly discipline a rowdy little one, is truly important.

The truth is children need a loving father in their lives. It is as essential to their emotional growth as food is to their physical growth. The devastation wrought by growing up in fatherless homes has been quantified by many research studies. The video at the end of the service will review some of the statistics. The important point for this message, however, is that the role of a human father is to be a physical embodiment of the love of the Heavenly father. It is an ordained responsibility for the privilege of bringing a new life into this world. There are no excuses allowed. Men who have not grown up with good male role models can still be good Dads. It is a little more difficult but the Holy Spirit and the scriptures can provide all the guidance that they need.  For instance, Yeshua provides an example of a proper attitude toward children in Luke. When the children were brought to him to be blessed, the disciples thought Yeshua was too busy to waste His time with children. They rebuked those who brought the little ones. Yeshua had a different view though. He said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

Our best example of fatherhood, of course, is our Father in heaven. We find examples of God as a loving father throughout scripture. One good portrayal of the Heavenly Father is Yeshua's parable in our scripture reading above of the Prodigal Son. The reason this story is so universally applicable is that virtually everybody experiences what the prodigal son experienced. There comes a time in everyone's life where we are sure we know better than our parents. We have it all figured out.

As we read, the son goes off into a far country and squanders all his money. When he runs out of money he runs out of friends. He ends up in a hog wallow, eating from the slop that is fed to the pigs. As he sits there the story says, “He came to himself.” And he starts thinking, “How many of my father’s hired men have food to spare? And here I am, starving to death. I will  go back to my father.”

Now notice something important. He felt that he COULD go back to his father. He was not sure the relationship could be the same after his actions but he knew the door was open to him. How did he know that? All through the time of raising his son the father must have communicated his love. “No matter how far you go, you can always come back home again.” That unconditional love of Father God is the most vital thing that a human Dad can communicate to his children.

So the son said, “I will say to my father, ‘I have sinned against heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired men.” I think this was a speech he practiced every step of his way back home. He had it down pat. He never had a chance to give his speech, though. Before he could say anything, his father ran to him and  threw his arms around him and kissed him. This father had no fear of expressing love.

You know, the beautiful part of the story is that father's embrace. There is no experience that is more satisfying to the soul of a child. To a child, a father's embrace embodies all the strength, security, protection, and assurance of abiding love. The hug says, " You are my beloved child in whom I am well pleased".  It is an embrace that heals what ever hurts. It makes you whole.

For many of you Fathers' Day is not easy. Some of you had bad relationships with your fathers. Some of you even had abusive or violent fathers. Some of you never knew your fathers. A few of you may not have known your Dad - even if you lived with him. You had Dads who were physically present but not accessible. I understand this last condition. I never knew my father, even though we lived in the same home for 18 years. My father was in the military so he was away from home often. Even when he was home, he was not really there. He was remote and aloof. He never said he loved me. He never initiated physical contact. When I  went to hug him, he became stiff and grunted like I was hurting him.

To all of you who had bad Dads or no Dads, my heart cries for you. I understand what it like to be an emotional orphan....to never have felt the unconditional love of a father. You and I...we have spent our lives hoping for someone to come running towards us. Our souls ached for our Dad's arms to be wrapped around us...and the hug never came. For those of us with absent or emotionally unavailable fathers, the little child inside of us has been starved of love and we are so hungry! Sometimes we try to hide that child behinds self -imposed walls of indifference but the hurt emerges unexpectedly. For those who had hurtful or violent Dads, those souls have a double injury. They are not only starved but wounded as well. With time the wounds heal but the scars are still there just under the surface and under the right circumstances, those scars open very easily. And for all of us who are fatherless children, it is hard to trust, to open up, to allow ourselves to love after having been betrayed so badly by the one that was so central to our psyche.

The good news is that you CAN heal if you allow yourself that opportunity.  The Heavenly Father is waiting to  be you loving Dad if you let Him. How do you learn to trust him though when you have never had a positive experience with a male authority figure in your life. How do you get the strength to make that long walk from where you are in life, into the Father's arms? It is easy. Get to know the Mother. Your Mother will introduce you to the Father. Learn to bask in the Holy Spirit Mother. Feel her presence. She is so sweet and gentle. Talk to Her, lean on Her. She will heal the hurts, and help you see your human fathers with forgiving eyes, understanding their flaws. Then you will see that their inadequacies are NOT your fault. As you gain confidence in yourself you will be able to share Her love with others. When you are ready She will lead you to your dear loving Fathers arms... and you will be whole.

Before we close the message, I would like to leave you with some more wisdom about fathers from Erma Bombeck "If I had to tell someone's son what a father really does that is important, it would be that he shows up for the job in good times and bad times. He's a man who is constantly being observed by his children. They learn from him how to handle adversity, anger, disappointment and success.

He won't laugh at their dreams no matter how impossible they might seem. He will dig out at 1 a.m. when one of his children runs out of gas. He will make unpopular decisions and stand by them. When he is wrong and makes a mistake, he will admit it. He sets the tone for how family members treat one another, members of the opposite sex and people who are different than they are. By example, he can instill a desire to give something back to the community when its needs are greater than theirs.

But mostly, a good father involves himself in his kids' lives. The more responsibility he has for a child, the harder it is to walk out of his life.

A father has the potential to be a powerful force in the life of a child. Grab it! Maybe you'll get a greeting card for your efforts. Maybe not. But it's steady work."

Happy Father's Day, Dads! and live up to your potential! Your kids need you.

Closing Prayer

Our Father and Mother in Heaven,

Bless the fathers that are reading this today

Some of them delight in their fathering; for others it's hard, perhaps very hard.

They are wounded themselves and are trying not to wound their own children.

Help them in their trials. Forgive them in their failures and help them forgive themselves.

Help us - all of us - to forgive our own fathers for their faults and failings.

and when we are hurting or lose our way,

guide us home,

wrap your arms around us

and make us whole in You

In the name of Yeshua,
Amen

Worship without Walls - The Wave of the Future?

 God is Love.jpg
The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
Psalm 24:1
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:16-18

Redefining Church for a New Age

It seemed very natural when we started meeting at the park to enjoy some time with each other on the Sabbath and  discuss our ideas about living our spirituality in this modern age. Essenes have always been reverent of nature and the creation of our Mother and Father. It seemed correct to spend our worship time outside - in the midst of the abundant display of the love of God. It also was very freeing. Our little worship group was not tied to maintaining a brick and mortar structure. We could spend our time in study and worship and use our funds strictly for God's work.

Ho'omana Health Ministry had created a different definition of church. Church is a community - no a place. We did not realize at the time that we were on the cusp of a new trend. However, this article from Christian Science Monitor reveals that other churches have also found the advantages of freeing themselves from the four wall mentality Foreclosures have forced some churches to meet in unconventional locations but  now, others are joining in -- willingly.

June 13 Sabbath Message - Living in the Sun

Sunrise.jpg
The summer solstice - the longest day in the year - is one week away. The Sun moves from Gemini into Cancer, signaling the point of solstice, of highest solar energy for this year. This was the ancient time of celebration, of outward joy in the fullness of life, the richness of our worldly blessings. In preparation for this celebration and the upcoming warm days of summer, this is a good time to consider what the sun means to us.

Opening Prayer

Our Father and Mother in Heaven,
As we come together this Sabbath to worship You
and celebrate this season of light.
We are reminded that You are the Light of this world
You are one who sent the prophets and then, Yeshua to illuminate our hearts
Now we humbly ask You to
give us a new light and understanding today.
and guide us further down the path of the Way.
Amen

Scripture Reading

 1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
       the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

 2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
       night after night they display knowledge.

 3 There is no speech or language
       where their voice is not heard.

 4 Their voice goes out into all the earth,
       their words to the ends of the world.
       In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,

 5 which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
       like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

 6 It rises at one end of the heavens
       and makes its circuit to the other;
       nothing is hidden from its heat.

 Psalm 19: 1-6

 12 But you, O God, are my king from of old;
       you bring salvation upon the earth.

 15 It was you who opened up springs and streams;
       you dried up the ever flowing rivers.

 16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;
       you established the sun and moon.

 17 It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;
       you made both summer and winter.

Psalm 74:12, 15-17

14"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16

  Message

Today marks the beginning of the week before summer solstice. The Solstice and Equinox dates are the points in earth's orbit around the sun that we use to define our seasons. The two equinox are the days when the sun crosses the equator so both night and day are an even 12 hours. The vernal equinox is around March 20th and marks the beginning of Spring. The autumnal equinox is around September 20th and marks the beginning of Fall. The two solstices mark the beginning of summer and winter. The summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere occurs about June 21, when the sun is in the zenith at the tropic of Cancer; the winter solstice occurs about December 21, when the sun is over the tropic of Capricorn. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year and the winter solstice is the shortest.

The word solstice is derived from two Latin words - sol meaning sun, and stitium which means " to stop". The name describes what appears to happen to the sun on the solstice. As the summer solstice approaches, the noonday sun rises higher and higher in the sky on each successive day. On the day of the solstice, it rises a barely perceptible amount compared to the day before. It appears to stop its rise that day and the next day it starts its descent towards winter.

Now you probably thinking right now that this is very informative but what does it have to do with spirituality and our walk as Essenes? Well, traditionally the Essenes were very careful to maintain a correct calender and their calender was different than all other Jewish sects of their time. All other sects used the lunar calender of the Pharisees. The Essenes maintained a solar calendar. They believed that the Solar Calendar was "the certain Law from the Mouth of God" and to be obeyed. The year began with the Spring equinox. The Essenes celebrated each equinox and solstice on the first day of those months (the first, fourth, seventh and tenth months.) According to the Book of Jubilees and the Book of Enoch, these Holidays were Ordained by Noah. "They are Written and Inscribed for an Eternal Witness.

1st Day, 1st month (Spring equinox): Noah was told to make the Ark. Also on this Day, Noah opened the doors of the Ark and saw the land. The Essene Celebration at the Spring Equinox was not a commemoration of a "pagan holiday" as some believe. It was a celebration of new life after the destruction of the flood.

1st Day, 4th month (Summer solstice): "the mouths of the deeps of the abysses which were beneath were shut." The rains of the flood stopped just as the spring rains have stopped by the time of summer solstice.

1st Day, 7th month (Fall Equinox): "all the mouths of the depths of the earth were opened, and the water began to go down into them." This is the shut down of life on earth during the flood. In the same manner each autumn is the end of the growth of summer.

1st day, 10th month: "the heads of the mountains appeared, and Noah rejoiced."  The mountains were a promise of new life. Just as the winter solstice is the end of the shortened winter days and start of the journey towards spring. The 1st day of the 10th month corresponds to the Winter Holiday Season around December 25th. According to the Book of Jubilees therefore, it is not some "pagan holiday" as some "Biblical Feast Keepers" and other denominations wrongly assert, but a yearly celebration ordained by Noah.

So celebrating the seasons has always been a part of the Essene heritage. Other societies and religions of that time also affixed some significance to the movement of the sun. If we look to ancient cultures from the beginning of time, the sun and its movement were always important. Man was always aware of his dependence on the Sun. The sun was our constant reminder of our dependence on the God that created it and kept it and our planet in its course. Without the Divine Providence that prevents another great catastrophe such as the flood or and ice age or the loss of the sun's light, life would cease to exist. There would be no movement, no form, no existence.

Every culture on earth has the sun's symbol embedded in their heritage. It is the symbol of continuity of life. In the daily cycle of the sun, the concept of the three stages of life are represented. God's wisdom of a three-in-one cycle of completion is revealed in the pattern of dawn, noon, and evening. In many ancient cultures, the Babylonians, Egyptians, Hindus and Persians, there was a three fold from of Supreme Intelligence seen in these daily manifestations of the sun. This orb, being the symbol of all light, has 3 distinct phases, rising, midday and setting. The philosophers, therefore, divided the life of all things into the same distinct parts- growth, maturity and decay.

The same analogy can be  used to understand the triune concept of God's manifestation to mankind. Between the twilight of dawn and the twilight of evening is a high noon of magnificent glory. God the Father, and Creator of law and order in the Universe. revealed Himself at the dawn of humanity as a needed element in the evolution of humanity from barbarian to civilized human.  Yeshua, the enlightened one, the Illuminator, was sent to bear witness of His Father and Mother to all mankind. He ushered in the noonday of the law of Love. He was the Lion of Judah, the maned golden-haired one. He brought in a new awareness that guided the civilizations of this age to their maturity.  Mother Shekinnah, the Holy Spirit, came as the sunset phase. She is the light at the horizon before this age vanishes into the darkness of night. She is our comfort in the evening hours....only to have the Light rise, again.

We now are in the night of this age...an age in which our Mother and Father raised a family of immature, sometime rowdy and disobedient children. A new day is just about to dawn. That age will be the time of the Kingdom of God on earth. All things must pass away so that all things can become new. It will not be easy. In fact, it will be quite difficult. Yeshua warns us there will be a time of Tribulation. In fact, "as the days of Noah were" so the last days before  the new era will be. Perhaps that is why the Essenes were told to celebrate the 4 feasts of Noah- the Solstices and Equinox. In those celebrations we are constantly reminded that the days of Noah will return. Things will become corrupt and ugly and increasingly difficult. There will be famines, and wars, and earthquakes in diverse places. This is necessary. It is the birthing pains of a new world. Then this world and many in it MUST pass away so that a new world can be born. It is the cycle of nature...God's law...like the cycle of the sun in the sky or the seasons of the year. There is always winter...a time of darkness and no life... before spring and rebirth.

But now, at this time of year - the summer solstice - we are celebrating life and light and warmth. We are in the golden days. This is the zenith of our year. This is the era of the Son. As coming of Yeshua represented the noon of this age. Summer represents the high point of the year. So while we experience the warm, full power of the Solstice sun next week, we are called to make true on earth the words of Master Yeshua, "I and the Father are One." Create within you a oneness with your Father and Mother this week. Recognize the Spirit of God within you and choose to truly act as a child of God. To understand this is to recognize the divinity in everyone we meet. Use this week of preparation for Solstice to see Father God and Mother Spirit in each face that you greet. Remember the Hawaiian concept of "Aloha" which means literally " the Divine breath in me recognizes and respects the Divine breathe within you" Look at someone right now and say "Aloha" and really mean it. If you are alone right now I challenge you to say Aloha to the next person you see

A Healthy Bite - Craving Converter

Healthy Snacking Made Easier

Here is a handy little guide to healthier eating. CravingConverter.com is a fun web site that helps the user make rational food choices. Here is how it works. Type a food you are craving into the search box. The site will suggest a healthier alternative. I tested the system by typing in chocolate - one of my regular cravings. The site listed a selection of chocolate choices with pictures. I clicked on the chocolate that looked most appealing to me and the program suggested I try a chocolate covered strawberry as a lower calorie, higher fiber and vitamin choice. I did and it tasted great!! I think this site could be a great tool for all who want to eat healthier.

There is also a PDF version of the Craving Converter that can be printed out. Carry it with you in your pocket or purse to have handy when the cravings hit!

WARNING: The Craving Converter is not a vegetarian site. However, I found a lot of good guidelines and advice I could convert to my vegan lifestyle. For instance, the site recommended berries and cream for an ice cream craving. I sliced strawberries and added a little soy coffee creamer and agave syrup. Yummy!

A Jewish Appeal to Vegetarian Lifestyle

There is a movement in religious circles lately to be responsible stewards of this planet. The argument of this stewardship movement is that Yahweh intrusted us with the care of His creation. We were given the gift of this world and all that is in it but we were also given the responsibility to tend it. Therefore, tending Yahwehs creation is actually a form of worship. When viewed in this way, care for creation and all the God's creatures is our sacred duty.

That is the premise and purpose of this Jewish site. www.asacredduty.com

I came across it while studying the scriptures on line for Shavout last week. I appreciated the heart and mindset of the group. Their spirit is very much in keeping with Essene philosophy so  It thought I would share. Enjoy!

Scripture Reading

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
       will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

 2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
       my God, in whom I trust."

 3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare
       and from the deadly pestilence.

 4 He will cover you with his feathers,
       and under his wings you will find refuge;
       his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

 5 You will not fear the terror of night,
       nor the arrow that flies by day,

 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
       nor the plague that destroys at midday.

 7 A thousand may fall at your side,
       ten thousand at your right hand,
       but it will not come near you.

 8 You will only observe with your eyes
       and see the punishment of the wicked.

 9 If you make the Most High your dwelling—
       even the LORD, who is my refuge-

 10 then no harm will befall you,
       no disaster will come near your tent.

 11 For he will command his angels concerning you
       to guard you in all your ways;

 12 they will lift you up in their hands,
       so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

 13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
       you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

 14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him;
       I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

 15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
       I will be with him in trouble,
       I will deliver him and honor him.

 16 With long life will I satisfy him
       and show him my salvation."

Psalm 91

 27 Why do you say, O Jacob,
       and complain, O Israel,
       "My way is hidden from the LORD;
       my cause is disregarded by my God"?

 28 Do you not know?
       Have you not heard?
       The LORD is the everlasting God,
       the Creator of the ends of the earth.
       He will not grow tired or weary,
       and his understanding no one can fathom.

 29 He gives strength to the weary
       and increases the power of the weak.

 30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
       and young men stumble and fall;

 31 but those who hope in the LORD
       will renew their strength.
       They will soar on wings like eagles;
       they will run and not grow weary,
       they will walk and not be faint.

Isaiah 40:27-31

  Message

Today, I want to discuss the joy of living "in the zone" spiritually. Runners are familiar with the concept of being in the zone. It is the phenomena where a runner has such a single-minded focus on the process of the exercise that nothing else matters. After enough time is passed, hormones called endorphins are released and the runner develops a sense of euphoria called a runner's high. People in the zone report they don’t feel the pain or stress of the exercise, and nothing distracts their minds. It is a wonderful state of being that is so pleasurable that it makes exercise almost addictive.

It is possible to enter "the zone" in other activities besides athletics. It can happen while talking to a friend, exploring a hobby, listening to music, or even doing projects at work. Often when I am writing my sermons, I get in "the zone". I am so focused on what I am doing, I don't  notice what is going on around me. Music can be playing, people talking, the dog can be whining to go outside, and I am oblivious. I am forming sentences in my mind, choosing words, and thinking of scriptures or hymns that fit the context. Hours go by. I don't feel hungry or thirsty. I don't even feel the need to relieve certain bodily functions. I am in "the zone".

Almost anyone who truly enjoys some activity or hobby, knows what it is like to be in "the zone". When we are in the zone, the distractions of the world, unsettled thoughts of our mind, and pain in our body all yield themselves to one focus. In this state, we are so fully engrossed in the moment that nothing else seems to matter.

There is also a spiritual state of being "in the zone". This is the state described in our scripture reading above. It is the "secret place of the most high". It is the shelter of the Almighty. It is when we run and are not weary, walk and are not faint. It is when we soar spiritually like an eagle. To be in the flow of the Spiritual zone is to be dialed into a Divine state of clarity, presence and power. It's being free of tension, worry and draining emotions. It's living with a sense of ease, vitality and deep inner calm.

Unlike the runner's zone, however, you can not attain a spiritual Zone by physical effort. In fact, physical effort will work against spiritual awareness. The Divine spark within us is the gift of God. It is our birthright as children of the Mother and Father. As such, it is innate and can only work when we allow it to flow unhindered. Just like a natural athlete throws a ball without thinking, the Spirit should be allowed to work through us without our conscious effort. You can not think through everything and be in the Zone. Over thinking stifles the flow of the Spirit, like choking on a golf swing.

The Spirit of God is often depicted in scriptures as water flowing...like a river out of the throne of God. It is a good metaphor. Think about it. River water is not stagnant. Those who are immersed in the river move along with it. Fighting against the stream just tires you out. At best you kick up a lot of mud and stay in one place. At worst, you get out of the river all together and are stuck on the shore. However, if you flow with the stream, you don't get tired at all. You move easily to new places and you are washed clean. That is what it is like to be in the Spiritual Zone.

Here is another metaphor... one of my own. I have had different models of Blackberry phones for years. Each has the same game on it called brick breaker. I have played that game for years. It is now almost automatic for me. I can play it without even thinking. In fact, I usually get my highest scores when I am playing without much conscious thought. I am relaxed and my mind is drifting. My thumbs are just playing away. I am not paying any attention to the score or how many lives I have left. If I do start to pay attention and get excited about how close I am to getting a new high score that is exactly when I mess up. When I start worrying about how many lives I have left, that's when I lose.

The spiritual game of life works the same way. Yeshua said that those who seek to save their lives will lose them and those who lose their lives for Yeshua's sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. The spiritual game is not a competition. It is playing for the joy of playing. Just like a puppy that runs just for the joy of feeling himself move, you focus only on how God is working through you. As the Spirit guides, you do the right thing immediately without second-guessing yourself. You’re able to relax because you feel confident that what is correct will happen. Then as it unfolds, you are able to delight in the beauty and wonder of the Now Moment. You're in the present moment. Your mind is clear. You have a sense of inner knowing that cannot be learned from a book, but is only known by accessing it directly. You are living in the joy of the Spiritual Zone!

Such experiences are often seen as mystical, religious states that only a few enlightened ones can experience. In reality, being in the Spiritual Zone is just you being more the real you. It is listening to the true you...the still small voice within. How do you do this? Scripture says to be "still and know that I am God." Isaiah called this waiting upon the Lord. The Spiritual Zone is not obtained by movement, work, activity, worry or anxiety. "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he".  Worry, anxiety, and confusion only create more worry, anxiety and confusion.

The Spiritual zone is found in a quiet place. Peace and stillness are required to recognize and cultivate the Spirit of God within us. There is an old Christian hymn. The lyrics are as follows: Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face and the things of this earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace."  Yeshua, the anointed one, or "Christ" in the Greek, walked a path of peace and gentleness during His time on earth. He lived His life in "the Zone". When we cultivate that Christ consciousness within us, we learn to acknowledge, appreciate and savor the Flow. We become more accustomed to living in a state of Spiritual awareness. Not working at spirituality, but allowing the spiritual to work through us. Like attracts like and as we live in this positive state of awareness, the negative falls away and more postive things manifest themselves in our lives....We are in the zone. Game over... a new high score.
